Such assessment is performed in order to investigate the ornithological situation at an aerodrome and to develop a set of measures to be taken to make the aerodrome less attractive for birds. In accordance with the requirements set forth in the Guidelines for Promotion of Ornithological Safety of Civil Flights ROOP GA-89, the procedure shall be performed once in 2 to 3 years.
The assessment is performed during 1 calendar year.
The ecological and ornithological assessment of an aerodrome area includes the following research activities:
-
Assessment of all types of ponds (including large, medium-size and small ponds, and permanent and temporary ponds) within 20 km from the aerodrome;
-
Estimation of time-space distribution and species composition of the ornithofauna within the aerodrome area with analysis of routes, heights, intensity and daily migration of the birds;
-
Analysis of specific features of the habitat and environmental factors promoting concentration of birds in the aerodrome area; and identification and description of various commercial facilities promoting concentration of birds in the neighbourhood;
-
Assessment of the need for and possibility to use equipment used for protection against birds according to specific features of the local ornithological situation; selection of the most suitable equipment; and estimation of the term during which such equipment should be used;
-
Analysis of the nature of the threat posed by birds for air flights at the aerodrome will be detailed in a separate section.
